Introduction

January 2002

I'm always working to improve my cages and plans. Soon, I'll have plans online for each of my cages, with the Material Lists available for a small charge. Currently, the only set of plans online is for building the Big Jungle Gym. But it's a great cage! Click here to see the plans.

I've updated the door design. It's now one big hinged door. Those double doors shown below were beautiful, but a little tricky to build, and they interfered with the view into the enclosure. The Tropical Jungle Gym

I took the new frame design and wrapped it in bamboo for a tropical look. While it is indeed beautiful, it doesn't clean up as easily as the cage with melamine panels, nor does it hold the humidity in as well, and worst of all, some iguanas have developed a nose-rub problem while trying to get out. So, I'll probably discontinue this design. Instead, I'll concentrate on making the standard Big Jungle Gym. It's a proven winner. To encourage people to order the white melamine-paneled version of this cage, instead of a custom cage, I've put it on sale for $689. Click here to see the order form.

One new feature shown here is the addition of cascading corner shelves. Having the shelves run diagonally across the cage makes them easier to climb and provides a break-fall whenever an iguana decides to free-fall off the front of the hanging basking hammock. All the shelves are hung from the frame by black chains with open links on top -- which allows them to be easily removed from the cage for cleaning. Works great. All the corner shelves except the top one have no floors -- for climbing all over, around and through them, and the top shelf provides the hottest spot in the cage, since it is slightly higher than the hammock.

Big Basking Jungle Gym For an outdoor enclosure, I wrapped the same great frame in green plastic mesh. While that does create the risk of a nose-rub injury, it wasn't a problem since I didn't leave the iguanas outside in the cage for long periods.

As you can tell, I love the corner cage design. It provides a very roomy enclosure, without overwhelming a room. It's feels very spacious inside, actually. It's five and a half feet wide and six feet tall! One of the greatest things about this new panel-based design -- other than the fact that I can now pre-build the panels and ship them out as easy-to-assemble cages -- is that these panels can be constructed into a wide variety of enclosure shapes, from a giant rectangular wall unit to a small cabinet style cage. You can see a few of the enclosures that I've made by taking a quick cage tour.

These cages just keep getting better and better! If you want me to let you know when the new plans are ready, just send me an email and I'll add you to my 'Interested List'. If you'd like me to build a cage for you, just print out the order form and mail it to me with your payment. Or give me a call: (561) 838-9048.

If you have any questions, just ask me. It's always nice to hear from fellow iguana lovers.

Sincerely,

Keith Van Zile
